Sara Wickenden - Encaustic Painting

In Sara's own words:

"Hotplate, Temperature gauge. Hot air gun, Beeswax, Ice scraper, Wax medium, Single Ring Hob, Paraffin wax, Razor and craft blades, Wax paint blocks-assorted colours, Brushes, High quality watercolour board, Heat resistant film, Modeling wax, Lint free cloth, Metal leaf and/or mica powder, Brayer.

Using these materials and tools I create encaustic paintings. Encaustic means ‘to burn in’.
After priming the watercolour board I build up the design and texture in a myriad of layers. Razor blades smooth the layers of the painting, modeling wax adds texture.

This form of encaustic painting is derived from the ancient Egyptian and Greek traditions of painting. Pigmented waxes were applied to wood or stucco and fused together in layers creating luminous and long lasting vivid images."
